Procedures for Science Class 2011-2012
I.
Procedure
for coming into class
a. Go to your desk and sit in it
b. Check to be sure that you have all of the required materials
c. Prepare for the 3mQ:
i. Get out a blank sheet of paper. Never do more than one 3mQ on a sheet of paper.
ii. Put the proper heading on the paper (see procedure II)
iii. Begin taking the 3mQ. Do not wait for the tardy bell to ring; do not wait for the teacher to tell you to get started.
d. If you come to class tardy:
i. Leave your things at your desk and get a tardy slip from the attendance office
ii. If you have a note from a teacher or administrator bring that note up to the teacher
iii. Do your best to figure out what is going on without interrupting your classmates. If you need help consult your syllabus.
e. If you do not have required materials:
i. See the teacher so that you may purchase what you need.
ii. If the teacher does not have the items you need be sure to stay after class to receive a “Notification of Reflection” paper.
II.
Procedure
for heading a paper
a.
Put your name and class period in the upper right
corner of your paper
b.
Put the type of assignment, name of the assignment
and the date in the upper left corner of your paper
c.
There are only four ‘types’ of assignments:
i.
3mQ
ii.
Homework
iii.
iv.
PT
d. Write on only one side of a sheet of paper. Never write anything you want graded on the back side of a sheet of paper
e.
If you need more than one page for an assignment:
i.
Be sure that your name and class period are in the
upper right corner of every page
ii.
Be sure that the type of assignment, name of
assignment and the date are in the upper left corner of every page
iii.
Do not fasten the pages together in any way
whatsoever.
III.
Procedure
for turning in a paper
a. Turning
in 3mQ, PT,
i. Pass the paper to the person in front of you
ii. The student in the first seat of a row you will pass the papers to the teacher when he gets to their row
b. Turning in a Major Test:
i. Be sure that you have placed your test ID on your scantron answer document
ii. Be sure that your name is on only those papers you want the teacher to grade.
iii. Stack the test papers in this order from top to bottom:
1. Scantron answer document
2. Loose leaf papers
3. The test itself
iv. Quietly leave your desk and being the papers to the teacher and put the papers in the teacher’s hand
c. Turning in a Lab:
i. Labs will be turned into the teacher’s hand on the day they are due. The teacher will never ask for labs
ii. The Report Coordinator is responsible to making sure that the lab is turned in to the teacher on time.
d. Turning in late work:
i. If the work is late on the same day it is due put “Late -10%” on the top left of the paper
ii. If the work is turned in the on the day after the assignment was due put “Late -30%” on the top left of the paper
iii. Always place late papers into the hand of the teacher.
e. Turning in early work:
i. Put “Early +30%” on the top left of the paper
ii. Always place early papers into the hand of the teacher
f. Turning in work after an absence:
i. Put the word ‘absent’ on the top left of the paper
ii. Always place absent work into the hand of the teacher
g. Never put late papers, early papers or absent papers on the teacher’s desk
Never turn in late papers, early papers or absent papers to a substitute
IV.
Procedure
for answering a question in writing
a.
Read the question carefully so that you know what
the question is really asking
b.
Answer the question in such a way that anyone can
tell what the question was simply by reading your answer
V.
Procedure
for answering a question orally when you do not know the answer
a.
Never answer a question with “I don’t know”
b.
Answer a question you do not know the answer to
with one of the following responses:
i.
My I have some more information please?
ii.
May I have some time to think?
iii.
Would you please repeat the question?
iv.
Where might I find some more information about
that?
v.
May I ask a friend for help?

Procedure
for taking a pop test or a major test
a. For a Pop Test
i. Clear your desk of everything except for a writing instrument
ii. Answer the pop test questions in the lined area on the pop test that is given to you
iii. Answer the questions according to procedure (See procedure IV)
iv. Since pop tests are always timed you must stop writing when time is called
v. If you finish the pop test early turn your paper over and sit quietly as your classmates finish or time is called
vi. When time is called the pop test must be passed to the person in front of you
b. For a major test
i. There is never a 3mQ on the day of a major test.
ii. When you arrive in the room be sure you have at least two sharpened pencils and plenty of blank loose leaf paper.
iii. You may purchase these from the teacher after the test is passed out.
iv. Never begin a major test with the multiple choice section.
v. Always start a major test with the short answer or problems portion of the test
vi. When you have finished the test follow procedure III b
vii. If you finish the test before the end of class sit quietly so that you are not a distraction to your classmates
VII.
Procedure
for making up a pop test or a major test
a.
Do not ever ask the teacher if you can make up a
test! Of course you can always make up a test.
b.
Tell the teacher when you are able to make up a
missed test. Be sure that you have followed the school policy for making up
work when you are absent.
c.
Confirm that the teacher will be able to make arrangements
for you to take the missed test on that day.
d.
Show up at the day and time you set with the
teacher
e.
If you miss the appointment to make up the test you
will not be given a second opportunity unless you have official notification
from a parent, teacher or an administrator indicating that your absence was
unavoidable.
VIII.
Procedure
for keeping track of your grade
a.
The teacher will give you a new grade record sheet
(GRS) each six weeks
i.
If the teacher fails to give you a GRS one may be

If you wish to acquire a six weeks GRS early you

b. When a graded pop test, ICA or HW is returned to you put the information from that paper on to the GRS as follows:
i. In the “Daily Work” column put the name of the assignment. If you headed your paper correctly this can be found in the upper left side of the paper
ii. In the “Date” column put the date the assignment was due
iii. In the “Grade” column put the grade you got on that assignment
c. When a graded major test or lab is returned to you place the information describe above into the “Major Test / Labs portion of the GRS
IX. Procedure for keeping an orderly notebook
a.
You must have a note book dedicated to this class
only. This must be a one-subject notebook. You must not share the notebook for
this class with any other class
b. The notebook for this class must be a three ring binder; the spine of this three ringed binder cannot be less than 1½ inches.
c.
In this binder you must have the following each and
every day:
i.
A minimum of ten sheets of blank loose leaf paper
ii.
Six pockets
d.
The pockets of your notebook should be organized as
follows:
i.
One pocket for all of your 3mQs
ii.
One pocket for all of your homework
iii.
One pocket for all of your in class work
iv.
One pocket for all of your major tests and labs
v.
One pocket for all of your pop tests
vi.
One pocket for your seating chart, class rules, class
policies, your current and past six weeks GRS, your formula sheet, and these
procedures
e.
At the end of a six weeks
grading period you may wish to clean out your notebook. However these papers
must be in your folder all year long:
i.
The papers that pertain to the current chapter of
study
ii.
All major tests
iii.
All labs
iv.
All six weeks grade record sheets
X.
Procedure
for caring for a text book
a.
Books issued to you:
i.
Your book must be covered at all times and that
cover must be in excellent condition. You may use a paper cover provided by the
teacher or you may use a cloth cover. In both cases the cover must be replaced
when its condition warrants
1.
Students with uncovered or poorly covered books
will be fined one dollar and will not be able to leave class until the book is
covered
2.
Paper book covers are provided by the teacher; they
are available at the table in the back right corner of the room These covers
are free of charge and it is not necessary to ask the teacher for permission to
take and use a cover
ii.
You must never put papers in your text book.
1.
Students with papers in their book will be levied a
one dollar fine for each single sheet of paper. This means that a paper folded
in half will incur a fine of two dollars; a paper folded into fourths will
incur a fine of four dollars.
2.
The fine will be reported to the library which
means that you will not be able to turn your book back into the library until
the fine is paid
b.
Using books in a class set:
i.
If your class has a class set you
are not permitted to bring the book issued to you to school unless it is
because you wish to turn that book back to the library. If you need a book
outside of class time:
1.
Get a book from the glass cupboards
2.
On a full sheet of loose leaf paper write the
following
a.
Your name in the upper right corner
b.
The date on which you got the book
c.
The number of the book
3.
Put this sheet of paper into the red folder on the
teacher’s desk
4.
When you return the book be
sure to take your loose leaf sheet out of the red folder.
5.
So long as that loose leaf sheet of paper with your
name and book number is in that red folder you have that book, even if you
returned it. If that paper is in the folder at the end of the year one way or
another, you will have to account for the book
ii.
The text book issued to you from a class set must
be covered at all times and the cover must be in excellent condition
iii.
You may use the paper cover issued by the teacher
or you may use a cloth cover
iv.
If either cover deteriorates you must recover the book.
Covers are in the back right corner of the room. You do not have to ask the
teacher for permission to use a cover
v.
Books in the class set are numbered, you will be
assigned a numbered book and that is the only book you are to be using during
class
vi.
The student in the last occupied seat in your row
is the only person allowed access to the back cupboard in order to pass out
books at the start of class
vii.
The student in the front most occupied seat in your
row is the only person allowed to return the books to the back cupboard
XI.
Procedure
for leaving your desk before class is dismissed
a.
Raise your hand quietly
b.
Waite quietly until the teacher acknowledges you
c.
When the teacher calls on you make your request
d.
Follow the instructions given by the teacher
XII.
Procedure for
leaving the classroom
a.
The only students permitted to leave the classroom
are those who are called to the office
b.
When you are called to the office with the
expectation of returning:
i.
Go to the door and get the official hall pass from
its place
ii.
Fill in the information on the hall pass
c.
Upon your return to class
i.
Record your return time on the hall pass
ii.
Return the hall pass to its place
iii.
Quietly, without disturbing your classmates, return
to your seat.
d.
When you are called to class with the expectation
of not returning
i.
On a full sheet of loose leaf paper put the
following
1.
In the upper right hand corner write your name
2.
Put the date under your name
3.
Under the date put the time and the period
4.
In the body of the paper write down where you are
going and where you have come from
ii.
Bring this paper to the teacher so that it can be
signed
e. When
we leave the class as a group:
i.
Unless otherwise instructed when we leave the class
as a group you will leave your things in the room. The door will be locked.
ii.
While we are in the hall you will not speak to
anyone, not to a classmate, not to a teacher, not to another student, not to anyone!
iii.
While we are in the hall you will not fool around,
you will not touch each other, you will not poke each other, throw things, or
otherwise be a distraction to yourself and others
iv.
While we are in the hall the only people who will
know that we are in the hall are those that see us in the hall
v.
Other classes in the hall not following these
procedures does not give you permission or a reason for you to cease following
these procedures
vi.
When these procedures are not followed the entire
class will be brought back to the room so that these procedures can be reviewed
XIII.
Procedure
for giving attention to the teacher
a.
When the teacher needs your undivided attention he
will say these words: “Look up here!”
b.
At these words all students will do the following instantly
and simultaneously:
i.
All talking stops
ii.
All hands are emptied of whatever is in them
iii.
All eyes are on the teacher
XIV.
Procedure
for when there is a substitute teacher
a.
Begin class as usual, following the procedure for
coming into class
b.
There will be assignments for you to do that will
be due by the end of class. These are the only assignments you are to give a
substitute
c.
Never give a substitute homework
d.
Never give a substitute late work
e.
Never give a substitute early work
f.
There will always be a homework assignment on a day
that there is a substitute, you are expected to begin that homework assignment
if you finish the in class assignment early
g.
If you do not finish the in class assignment do not
give it to the substitute, rather turn it in late when the teacher returns
h.
If a test is scheduled for the day you have a
substitute you will not, of course, take the 3mQ. Turn in the test just as you
would for the teacher (see procedure III b)
i.
As with an in class assignment, if you finish the
test early start on the homework
j.
Make sure that your behavior with a substitute is
twice as good as it is with the teacher, in such a case the response of the
teacher will also be twice as good. The same is true if your behavior is not
twice as good!
